From Earth to Sky

Myrtle-Wyckoff Transit Station, Brooklyn, NY
Commissioned by Arts for Transit, MTA
Ceramic, Glass and Stone Mosaic, 36 ft. x 28 ft.
Fabricated by Mosaika Art & Design, 2007

Through a lush canopy of foliage, the mosaic, From Earth to Sky, offers a view skyward—a joyful visual escape from the station. Birds and butterflies animate the fantasy, while a small central map inverts the perspective, depicting New York City from above and marking the viewer’s actual location. Foliage made from ceramic tile contrasts with a sky of iridescent glass, while colorful birds, bees, butterflies, and the aerial map are crafted from combinations of glass, smalti, and stone mosaic.
